How to Use the Tilapia Salinity Manager
Free. No sign-up. Works on your phone.
What it gives you
- Kilos and sacks of salt for a pond (area × depth) or a tank or bag (litres).
- A 3 PPT dose for handling and transport stress.
- Salt to block nitrite, from your nitrite reading.
- A day-by-day schedule when fish are already in the water, so salinity never jumps too fast.
Salt helps tilapia cope with handling and transport, blocks nitrite poisoning, and matters every day for saline strains. This free tool works out exactly how many kilos of salt to add, or how much fresh water to add to bring salinity down.
How to use the Salinity Manager, step by step
Open the tool
Go to arandcagriventures.com, tap Tilapia Tools, then choose Salinity Manager.
Choose your tilapia type
Freshwater tilapia (Nile, red, GIFT) or a saline / brackish strain.
Choose the purpose
Raise salinity, lower salinity, handling stress (3 PPT), or a nitrite problem.
Enter the water
For a pond, type the area and average depth. For a tank or bag, type the litres.
Enter the current salinity
Type 0 for fresh water, or your refractometer reading.
Tap Calculate salt
The result shows the kilos of salt and how to apply it.
The example in the video
| Tilapia type | Freshwater tilapia |
|---|---|
| Purpose | Handling stress (3 PPT) |
| Water | Tank or bag, 1,000 litres |
| Current salinity | 0 PPT |
| Salt to add | 3.2 kg |
|---|---|
| Target salinity | 3.0 PPT (0.30%) |
| Water volume | 1 m³ |
How to read the result
For 1,000 litres of fresh water, 3.2 kg of salt gives 3 PPT, allowing for salt that is about 95% pure. Use plain rock or solar salt without iodine, dissolve it fully in part of the water before the fish go in, and check with a refractometer the next day before adding more.
Questions growers ask
How much salt do I add per 1,000 litres for tilapia transport?
About 3.2 kg of plain, non-iodized salt per 1,000 litres gives 3 PPT, the dose the tool uses for handling and transport stress.
What kind of salt should I use?
Plain rock salt or solar salt without iodine. Dissolve it completely before adding fish.
Made for tilapia growers in the Philippines
These tools and tutorials come from AR&C Agriventures, a tilapia hatchery in Banga, South Cotabato, Philippines. They work the way growers here buy and sell: kilos, sacks and pesos, with captions in Tagalog. They are free for every grower in the Philippines, from South Cotabato and the rest of Mindanao to Luzon and the Visayas.
