How to Use the Tilapia Biomass & Sampling Calculator
Free. No sign-up. Works on your phone.
What it gives you
- Average body weight (ABW) from the sample.
- Live fish, from fish stocked and estimated survival.
- Total biomass in the pond, in kilos.
- Estimated losses so far.
You cannot weigh every fish in the pond, but you can weigh 30. This free calculator turns a small sample into the average body weight, the number of live fish and the total biomass: the numbers you need to set the feed.
How to use the Biomass & Sampling, step by step
Open the tool
Go to arandcagriventures.com, tap Tilapia Tools, then choose Biomass & Sampling.
Enter the fish stocked
The number of fingerlings you put in.
Weigh a sample
Catch at least 30 fish from several spots in the pond and weigh them together.
Enter the fish in the sample and their total weight
The number of fish weighed and the total in grams.
Enter the estimated survival
Your best estimate of the percentage still alive.
Tap Calculate
The result shows the ABW, live fish and biomass.
The example in the video
| Fish stocked | 3,000 |
|---|---|
| Fish in sample | 30 |
| Total sample weight | 1,500 g |
| Estimated survival | 78% |
| Estimated biomass | 117 kg |
|---|---|
| Average body weight | 50.0 g |
| Live fish | 2,340 |
| Estimated losses | 660 |
How to read the result
Thirty fish weighing 1,500 g together average 50 g each. With 78% of 3,000 fish alive, that is 2,340 fish and 117 kg in the pond. Take that 50 g straight to the Feeding Calculator to set today's ration. Sample every two weeks; accuracy depends on a fair sample from several parts of the pond.
Questions growers ask
How do I compute the average body weight (ABW) of tilapia?
Divide the total weight of the sample by the number of fish in it. 1,500 g ÷ 30 fish = 50 g ABW.
How do I compute the biomass in my pond?
Multiply the live fish by the average body weight. 2,340 fish × 50 g = 117 kg.
Made for tilapia growers in the Philippines
These tools and tutorials come from AR&C Agriventures, a tilapia hatchery in Banga, South Cotabato, Philippines. They work the way growers here buy and sell: kilos, sacks and pesos, with captions in Tagalog. They are free for every grower in the Philippines, from South Cotabato and the rest of Mindanao to Luzon and the Visayas.
Need fingerlings? We supply tilapia fingerlings in South Cotabato and across Mindanao, including our saline tilapia strain. Call or text +63 968 364 1908.
